Volunteer Feature: UVic Community Engaged Learning

SAHIL VIRK

My name is Sahil Virk and I am a Uvic student volunteering with Friends of Music. When I arrived at my first Open Mic event, everyone welcomed me with open arms and made me feel right at home. I could immediately feel that this was a supportive environment where everyone was focused on having a good time. The instructors are very experienced musicians, but they are also very friendly and helpful in teaching others and allowing everyone to feel comfortable. Getting to know the other members has been a lot of fun and watching them perform is always awesome. Learning new musical skills is much more fun with others!

I joined Friends of Music through the Uvic Community Engaged Learning program, which connects students with community-based partners. I am very grateful for the relationships that this program has allowed me to develop and the experience I have gained working with a local organization. Everyone involved works extremely hard to make this happen and I know that their time and effort is appreciated by all. The sense of community that a single non-profit can create is astounding and getting a firsthand view of it has been incredible.

For anyone that enjoys musical performances and great company, I would definitely recommend stopping by!
